South African iron ore export shipments in Apr’20 witnessed 17% drop to 4.16 MnT, against 5 MnT in Mar’ 20, according to bulk vessel line up data maintained with SteelMint,
The President of the Republic of South Africa on 23 March declared a 21-day nationwide lockdown that took effect at midnight on Thursday 26 March, in order to help curb the spread of COVID-19 in South Africa. Later in mid-Apr, the lockdown was extended for two-more weeks. As a consequence, exports from the country fell for the month.
South African export shipments to China dropped 63% in Apr’20
South Africa’s total iron ore export to China for the month of Apr’20 recorded at 1.26 MnT, down 63% as compared to 3.38 MnT in Mar’20.
Exports to Japan were recorded at 0.29 MnT, up 19% against 0.25 MnT in Mar ’20. Exports to Netherland marked at 0.29 MnT followed by Germany at 0.28 MnT.
South African export shipments to India dropped to nil for the month
The total iron ore exports to India for the month recorded nil amid closure at numerous Indian mills caused due to outbreak of pandemic COVID-19. Exports in the month of Mar’20 were at 0.11 MnT.
