Honorable Supreme Court has permitted Sesa Sterlite Limited (earlier Sesa Goa Limited) to restart mining operations at its Karnataka mines.
The company has resumed mining activities at its Narrain mine in Chitradurg, after receiving necessary permissions from Karnataka Government.
It is permitted to utilize only 40% of installed capacity and produce 2.4 MnT pa Iron ore. The material would be sold only through e-auctions, once the company’s changed name is approved (was changed after imposition of ban).
On 18 April, 2013, the Court had allowed A and B category mines to start mining operations after completion of the R&R plans. In July 2011, a ban on mining was imposed by Supreme Court in Karnataka, owing to illegalities (environmental degradation) in Turmur and Chitradurg.
