Steel Ministry Extends Deadline for Enforcement of Indian Standards

Ministry of Steel has revised the date of enforcement and the period has been extended by three months beyond 23rd April. The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) office has been shut and the operations discontinued temporarily amidst the ongoing lockdown and travel ban.

The order stated, “In pursuance to the notification of the Steel and Steel Products (Quality Control) order 2020 dated 19 February 2020, the date of enforcement of the following Indian Standards is hereby extended by three months beyond 23rd April.”

The BIS certification process is not included under the essential services and hence had to be closed down. Meanwhile, producers feel that the extension might be further revised as for the compulsory certification, BIS officials need to travel to the Industries, which may not happen anytime soon due to the travel restrictions applicable all over the world.
