The Indonesian House of Representatives Commission VII on energy and mining has reached an agreement with the government to postpone the deliberation of the new mining bill, which was initially scheduled to start on 8 April amid the ongoing corona virus pandemic.
The House Commission VII Chairman Sugeng Suparwoto said on Tuesday that the House was expected to decide on a new schedule after 21 April 2020.
“There’s currently a force majeure situation. Ministries are currently focused on dealing with the Covid-19 crisis”, he said.
The long-awaited revision of Mining Law No 4/2009 has suffered repeated delays. The revision of the mining law was initiated by the House.
The country’s coal mining industry has urged the House and the government to quickly complete the revision of the mining law as a number of coal miners are expected to see their current operating permit to expire within the next few years, including PT Arutmin Indonesia, whose coal contract of work (PKP2B) will expire in November 2020. The new law will provide legal basis for renewal of the operating permit.
