GPH Ispat, one of the major steelmakers based in Chittagong (Bangladesh), has suspended its new quantum EAF furnace operations, according to SteelMint’s reliable source. The company has taken the challenging decision as a cautious step over the global epidemic COVID-19.
However, the GPH’s older plant is continued at work without any obstruction. The plant has an annual capacity of around 170000 MT/year. After the arrival of two bulk scrap cargoes earlier, in addition to several containerized cargoes and bookings, the mill has more than sufficient inventory to run their older plant at normal production levels, added sources.
New quantum EAF furnace had successfully performed its test runs on 15th Jan’20. The plant includes an 80 MT Quantum EAF Furnace with a preheating system, which provides a staggering 36 heats per day for steelmaking, on account of a low tap-to-tap time of just 40 minutes, with this the company’s annual steel melting capacity of 840,000 MT/year.
The new plant will again resume operations once the pandemic situation gets normalized, stated the company executives.
