High Grade Iron Ore Will Continue to Have Huge Demand – McKinsey

The conference opened up with deep insights from Mr Abhijit Kulkarni, Partner, McKinsey & Company, India. He shared that demand for high grade iron ore will continue to have huge demand in global market and will continue to fetch high premiums.

There could be some disruption in Indian iron ore supplies in near term because of change in hands due to auctions. Industry may barely manage near term disruption but needs to think on long term sustainability, he added.

He also highlighted that there is growing steel demand and production in India and it’s expected that steel demand will grow at 6% CAGR to 180-195 MnT pa by 2030 and capacity of 220-240 MnT pa.

So overall Indian iron ore industry is at an interesting cusp, both due to market dynamics and regulatory changes.
