Japan Steel Import Statistics 2019

Japanese raw material (coal & iron Ore) imports down by 2.56%, whereas finished steel (Finish long & Flat) imports surged by 10% Y-o-Y in CY19, as per the custom data maintained with SteelMint.

Coal imports by Japan dropped 2% on the year, as it had extended its fall during CY19, weighed down by high coal inventories, gradually recovering nuclear output and maintenance shutdowns.

As per data provided by Japanese customs, the country imported 192.42 MnT coal in CY19 as against 196.33 MnT in CY18. Apparently, the import volume had attained a 7-year low total in the process.

Iron Ore- On a yearly basis, the country’s iron ore imports were registered at 119.57 MnT in CY’19, down by 3.47% as compared to 123.87 MnT in CY’18.

Finish Long Steel imports by Japan marked at 0.07 MnT in CY’19 which is the highest in last 7 years and on a yearly basis, the same moved up by 16.7% as compared to 0.06 MnT in CY’18.

Finish Long Stainless Steel imports by Japan were registered at 24,234 MT in CY’19 up by 11.25% Y-o-Y as against 21,784 MT in CY’18.

Finish Flat Steel- Japan’s finish flat steel imports stood at 4.68 MnT in CY’19, up by 9% from 4.29 MnT in CY’18.

Finish Flat Stainless Steel imports by the country were registered at 193,072 MT in CY’19, plunged by 13% as against 222,159 MT in CY’18, on an yearly basis .

Ferro Alloy- Japan’s Ferro alloy imports on an year on year basis were recorded at 2.56 MnT in CY’19, down by 5.9% as against 2.72 MnT in CY’18.
