Domestic Coal Rakes Supplied by Railways

Domestic Coal Rakes Transported by Indian Railways Down 11% Y-o-Y in Jan’20

Rakes supplied by Indian railways for domestic coal movement have posted a fall of 11% Y-o-Y to 12,048 in Jan’20 compared with 13,531 in Jan’19. The rakes’ count had also decreased on the monthly basis, thereby ending the progressive rise seen in rake movement lately.

Data compiled by CoalMint research shows that domestic coal rakes delivered in Jan’20 was marked lower by 20 units in absolute terms, from 12,068 noted in Dec’19.

An elevated coal supplies from CIL since Oct’19 was part reflected in the increased coal movement. However, a gradual build-up of coal stock at power plants had apparently reduced the demand for prompt rake supplies during Jan’20.

Coal stocks at power plants had peaked to 34.666 MnT as on 31 Jan’20, equivalent to 19 days’ consumption, up by 10% M-o-M as against 31.625 MnT, which was equivalent to 18 days’ consumption at the same time last month, data provided by power ministry showed.

The assessed stock grew 72% Y-o-Y from 20.208 MnT recorded on 31 Jan’19, sufficient for 12 days of power generation at that time.

Incidentally, coal rakes supplied to the power sector was down 12% Y-o-Y to 8,790 in Jan’20, compared with 9,997 in Jan’19, which had also noted a modest drop M-o-M from 8,843 in Jan’19.

Rake delivered to the non-power sector had managed an incremental rise on monthly basis to 3,258 in Jan’20, but was still marked 8% lower on the year from 3,534 in Jan’19.

Major Coal Receivers:
India’s largest power producer-NTPC had taken the highest number of coal rakes for its plants’ operation, but the acquired quantity had decreased 3% M-o-M to 1,739 during Jan’20. Maharashtra State Power Generation Company was the second-largest rake procurer, with intake of 846 rakes in Jan’20.

Highest number of rakes among the non-power sector was delivered to SAIL, whose intake had fell 4% M-o-M to 433 in Jan’20 compared with 450 in Dec’19.
