Steel Mills in Central India Receive Notice for Pollution Control; Impact Limited

Steel manufacturers in Raipur (central India) have received notice from National Green Tribunal (NGT) for not controlling pollution.

As per trusted sources, the steel mills who have annual capacity of 60,000 MT and above have to get environmental clearance (EC) from the NGT. Thus, the plants that don’t have needed clearances have got notice to pay penalty or else have been ordered to shut their units.

As per sources, about 30 plants have got this notice since the last week and if sources are to be believed they have got penalty notice of around 20-25 lakhs or more. Hence they have requested the court to grant a stay on this order.

Further few have mentioned that, the mills have plan to approach Supreme Court (SC) for a stay on this order as they are not willing to pay the huge amount.

In addition it is being learned that another plants are in watch list in NGT which might receive notice in the coming days.

Will it affect steel supply or prices ?

SteelMint in conversation with mills learned that they are passing through a tough time as they are not in hope that court can hear those pleas.

However, they added that if mills do not pay the penalty and court will not put a stay on the order, govt. may cut their power supply and ultimately might have an impact on supply and prices.
