India: NMDC raises pellet offers for domestic market

NMDC Granted Two Coal Blocks for Commercial Mining

Being a renowned name in Iron ore mining, NMDC has now stepped into coal sector with the allotment of two coal blocks.

The coal ministry has allocated Rohne and Tokisud North coal blocks to National Mineral Development Corporation (NMDC), under Coal Mines (Special Provision) Act 2015, for commercial mining. Both the coal blocks are located at an aerial distance of about 10-15 kms in Hazaribagh district of Jharkhand.

Rohne block containing coking coal extractable reserves of 191 MnT, has been granted to NMDC for primary use in commercial sale of coal. Besides, it would also serve the purpose of captive consumption at its upcoming steel plant.

Subsequently, the company is exploring the possibility for setting up of coal washery for the block, intended for efficient coal beneficiation before being fed into steel plants.

Whereas, Tokisud coal block has extractable reserves of about 52 MnT of non-coking coal, from which planned production was assessed at 2.32 MnT per annum.

Incidentally, the block belongs to the six mines that were under consideration for final approval under the 6, 7, 8 and 9 tranches of allotment process. Apparently, NMDC, JSMDCL, and MPSMPCL were in line for securing the mining rights of the block.

The ministry has not notified regarding the final allotment of remaining five coal blocks.

NMDC has informed that allotment agreement of Rohne coal block would be executed as per the directives from the ministry with respective execution date. While, agreement for Tokisud North mine would be initiated in the next two days.
