Canada Iron Ore Exports Down Marginally in Oct’19

Canada iron ore exports recorded at 4.87 MnT in Oct’19, down marginally as against 5.1 MnT in Sep’19. On yearly basis too, exports dropped as compared to 5.1 MnT in Oct’18.

China stood the largest importer of Canadian iron ore for the month at 1.23 MnT, down 17% as compared to 1.49 MnT in Sep’19. Chinese mills reduced imports for the month amid rising winter production curbs. Japan stood second largest importer at 0.65 MnT (up 20% M-o-M), followed by Netherland at 0.48 MnT and Germany at 0.41 MnT.

Ferrous scrap exports witnessed a sharp rise by 37% in Oct’19

The country exported 421,537 MT as compared to 307,015 MT of ferrous scrap exported in Sept’19. On a yearly basis, scrap export decreased by 4% from 439,558 MT during the same period a year ago. The United states remained the largest scrap importer from Canada,with 55% share of total scrap exported by Canada, as it imported 230,730 MnT in Oct’19, almost the same volume as Sep’19.

Canadian coal exports down 29% in Oct’19

Canadian coal exports have dropped 29% on the month to record a 5-month low during Oct’19. Data provided by customs indicate that exports from the country stood 2.87 MnT in Oct’19 as against 4.04 MnT in Sep’19. The month of October generally depicts a fall in export volume, as seen from the pattern for the past years.

However, exports in Oct’19 was still marked 24% higher on the year from 2.32 MnT noted in Oct’18. South Korea remained the largest coal buyer from Canada in Oct’19, followed by Japan and China. Though, all the major importers had witness a hefty decline in coal sourcing during the month.
