With process of coal mine auction done and dusted, Indian coal ministry has turned towards allotment of coal mines to further boost the country’s coal production.
The ministry has highlighted that applications were received in case of 6 out of 15 coal mines offered for sale via allotment, and the same were in line for consideration to be allotted to the eligible applicants.
It is pertaining to note that the ministry had initiated the allotment process for 15 coal mines under tranches 6, 7, 8 and 9 for various specified end-uses i.e. power, sale of coal and iron & steel.
Of the total applications received, 4 of them were for mines belonging to the Tranche 6; while one mine each from Tranche 7 and 9 had collected bids for proposed allotment.
The highest number of applicants was noted for Mandakini and Utkal-C mine which have fetched attention from various state electricity boards. While among the mines offered for sale of coal, three applicants had shown interest for Tokisud North coal mine.

The underlying coal mines are envisaged to boost coal production in the country by adding more than 5 MnT coal per annum, thereby reducing the dependence of industries on imported coal. Besides, it would also generate about INR 15,000 Crores revenue for state governments where the mines are located besides royalties and other applicable taxes.
