Turkey: Coal Imports Up 20% M-o-M in Oct’19

Turkey’s coal imports have increased 20% on the month to attain a 13-month high total during Oct’19.

Data provided by customs indicate that coal intake by the country was marked 4.14 MnT in Oct’19 as against 3.44 MnT in Sep’19, coal volume had also recorded modest y-o-y growth compared with 4.08 MnT in Oct’18.

Apparently, an increased demand for non-coking coal had paved the way for higher imports during the month. Incidentally, Turkey’s non-coking coal imports had breached the 3-MnT mark for the first time in CY19, rising 29% on the month to 3.43 MnT in Oct’19.

Intake of pet coke had also increased 27% M-o-M to 0.28 MnT in Oct’19, but a decline of 41% was noted in coking coal monthly imports which was recorded at 0.29 MnT in Oct’19.

Major Coal Exporters:
Coal supplies from the major exporter-Colombia, surged 29% M-o-M to 1.85 MnT in Oct’19, coal volume was also noted 16% higher on the year from 1.59 MnT in Oct’18.

Russian coal exports to Turkey extended its growth on the month, to record highest total for CY19. Exports were recorded at 1.58 MnT in Oct’19, up 11% M-o-M from 1.42 MnT in Sep’19 and had also increased 49% from the levels attained in the year-ago month.

A reduced appetite for coking coal resulted in a decline in intake from the US which had fell 21% M-o-M to 0.3 MnT in Oct’19. Besides, no shipments were recorded from Australia during the month.

During the first 10 months of CY19 (Jan-Oct’19), Turkey’s coal imports have reached 32.98 MnT, down 10% Y-o-Y from 36.66 MnT noted in the year-ago month.
