India: Coal Traffic Handled at Major Ports Up 4% M-o-M in Nov’19

Coal shipments received at India’s 12 major ports have increased 4% on the month to 10.811 MnT in Nov’19, following a rise in thermal coal imports. The country had imported 10.374 MnT coal in Oct’19.

Indian demand for thermal coal has picked-up lately recovering well from the Industrial slowdown, besides, the subdued domestic supplies has also spurred the appetite for imports.

Data provided by Indian Ports Association indicates that intake of thermal and steam coal had increased 14% M-o-M to 7.077 MnT, thereby attaining a 5-month high total during Nov’19.

However, receipt of coking coal extended its fall on the month to register its lowest total for FY20 during Nov’19. Incidentally, coking coal imports were marked 10% lower on the month at 3.734 MnT in Nov’19.

Paradip port was the highest receiver in Nov’19 with intake of 2.344 MnT coal, but that was down 3% M-o-M from 2.411 MnT in Oct’19.

Coal shipments handled at second-placed Kandla port, rose 39% M-o-M to 1.74 MnT in Nov’19.

Total Coal Receipt in FY20:
In spite of the monthly growth in thermal coal imports, a better inventory recorded at power plants comparable to the previous year has slashed the overall coal intake in the current fiscal.

Apparently, total coal import at major ports has fallen 11% Y-o-Y to 95.348 MnT during the first 8 months of FY20 (Apr-Nov’19) as against 107.253 MnT noted in the year-ago period.

Share of thermal and steam coal in total volume, was down 18% Y-o-Y to 58.177 MnT in the 8-month period, whereas coking coal receipt had modestly increased to 37.171 MnT during Apr-Nov’19 as against 36.459 MnT in Apr-Nov’18.

Among the 12 major ports, only Kandla and Mormugao had managed to record growth in coal imports during the first the 8-month of FY20. While, no imports were recorded at JNPT, Chennai and Cochin ports.
