India’s largest coal miner-CIL, has reported a rise in production figures for the second successive month during Nov’19, eventually making a recovery from the prolonged disruptions resulting from heavy rains and agitation due to strike activities.
Coal production by the company stood 50.02 MnT in Nov’19, up 27% on the month from 39.35 MnT in Oct’19.
The monthly output was the highest total CIL has attained in the fiscal so far. However, it was still marked 4% lower on the year from 52.06 MnT in Nov’18.
CIL’s coal production in the FY20 has been affected by disruption at its major coal producing subsidiaries-South Eastern Coalfields (SECL) and Mahanadi Coalfields (MCL) which have again reported a y-o-y fall in Nov’19. Although, the two coal majors posted an improved output m-o-m to emerged as the main contributors during the month.
SECL came out on top with an output of 11.64 MnT, followed by MCL which had clocked 10.69 MnT coal production during Nov’19. NCL slide to the third spot among major coal producers, but had noted an impressive growth of 11.7% Y-o-Y while posting an output of 9.6 MnT.
CIL generally compensates for the production drop of the first half of the fiscal during the second half and is being helped by the other subsidiaries as well to reduce the deficit.
As a matter of fact, ECL’s coal production of 4.34 MnT in Nov’19 was the highest-ever output achieved by the company during the month of November since its inception.
During the first 8 months of FY20 (Apr-Nov’19), CIL’s coal production has fallen 8% Y-o-Y to 330.38 MnT, as against 358.3 MnT noted in the year-ago period.

CIL’s Coal Dispatch:
CIL’s coal dispatch rose 17% on the month to 47.37 MnT in Nov’19, but was marked 8% lower on the year from 51.26 MnT noted in Nov’18. Incidentally, it was the first time in FY20 that monthly coal production had exceeded the corresponding dispatch noted for a month.
Total coal dispatch in the 8-month period reached 363.63 MnT lagging behind by 7% from the levels attained in the year-ago period.
