Chhattisgarh state owned power plants are facing crisis of Coal stock, having reported critical coal stock levels for power generation.
Sources aware of the fact have informed that Chhattisgarh State Electricity Board (CSEB) was facing a coal scarcity as its requirement for power generation was not completely catered by SECL. Apparently, increase in electricity demand amid low coal stocks had created nuisance for the power generator, who was forced to operate only two of its power unit at the1340 MW Korba-West power plant.
CSEB’s chief coal supplier-SECL was only supplying 18,000 MT coal per day whereas more than 22,000 MT was required for the full scale power generation. Thermal power plant located in Korba having a daily coal requirement of 6,000 MT had only single day of stock left. Similarly, DSPM power plant was also witnessing critical coal stock levels.
Officials from CSEB were seemed baffled by the lower coal supplies from SECL, as they cited their requirement was only 19% of the total coal production.
Captive power plants were also facing adverse conditions due to low coal availability in the state where around 200 industries were having power stations for catering their own electricity needs.
Many of these industries had claimed that SECL’s preference to other-state consumers for coal allocation had left them in dire need of purchasing from alternate markets.
Of late, SECL had seen subdued coal production in the FY20, and would have to step-up its output to meet the coal demand from both captive and non-captive power producers in the state.
