Coal imports taken by Taiwan have increased 4% on the month to 6.09 MnT in Sep’19 as against 5.88 MnT in Aug’19. Coal volumes were also marked 1% higher on the year from 6.03 MnT in Sep’18.
Taiwan’s coal imports were little changed in the third-quarter of CY19, mainly because of stable coal-fired power generation. Notably, country intake by the country stood 18.57 MnT in Q3 CY19 as against 18.61 MnT in Q3 CY18.
While Taiwan’s government is seeking to increase electricity generation from gas and renewables, coal imports are expected to remain resilient in the short-term.
During the first 9 months of CY19 (Jan-Sep’19), Taiwan’s coal imports have reached 51.6 MnT, down 1% Y-o-Y from 52.21 MnT noted in the year-ago period.
Major Coal Exporters:
Taiwan had witness an uptick in coal sourcing from its major suppliers-Australia and Indonesia, while intake from remaining sources had fell during Sep’19.
Australian coal exports to Taiwan rose 17% on the month to 3.04 MnT in Sep’19 compared with 2.6 MnT in Aug’19, and was noted almost stable y-o-y from 3.06 MnT in Sep’18.
Coal Supplies from Indonesia increased 10% M-o-M to 2.16 MnT in Sep’19, which was also marked 22% higher on the year from 1.77 MnT in Sep’18.
Coal receipt from Taiwan’s third-largest supplier Russia dropped 6% M-o-M to 0.73 MnT in Sep’19, but but was up 3% Y-o-Y from 0.71 MnT in Sep’18.
