India’s Scrapped Ship Imports Increase in Oct’19 Amidst Drop in Offers

Alang – Gujarat, has registered sharp growth in imports of scrapped ships in Oct’19 and the volume rose by 148% M-o-M, as per customs data maintained by SteelMint.

Fall in prices amid sufficient availability of ship breaking/ferrous scrap have led to increase in number of ships in Oct’19 which was coming for demolition in Alang, western India. SteelMint price assessment showed drop in imported ship breaking scrap prices to India by USD 10/MT in Oct’19.

As per data, scrapped ships import in India was recorded at 115,264 LDT in Oct’19 as against 46,494 LDT in Sep’19. However on yearly comparison, the ship breaking import volume declined by 10% in Oct’19 as against 128,798 LDT in Oct’18.

The total number of demolished ships in Alang was marked at 14 in numbers in Oct’19, the number increased by 6 on monthly basis.

Coming to the pricing part, the latest offers rose by USD 10/LT (W-o-W) and the fresh offers for India stood at USD 360/LT for Tankers, USD 370/LT for Containers & USD 350/LT for Dry bulk.

As present buying interest by Indian indenters are at firm level amid slight drop in Indian Rupee value in a week, which is currently hovering at INR 71.54 against US dollar.

In Oct’19, the total quantity beached in ASIA (Alang – India, Gadani – Pakistan & Chittagong port in Bangladesh) stood at 278,506 LDT, rise by 125.44% M-o-M as against 123,535 LDT in Sep’19.

Furthermore, Bangladesh remains in the topped buyers list of scrapped ships in Oct’19 as the nation’s import surged by 113.5% to 162,063 LDT with total of 21 ships, as against 75,893 LDT (6 ships) in Sep’19. Meanwhile, the prices fell by USD 20/LT this week & stood at USD 350/LT for Containers and USD 340/LT for Tanker.

Pakistan stood as 3rd in the ship recycling as it imported 1,179 LDT with 1 number of ship at Gadani port. The imported prices to Pakistan declined by USD 5/LT and stands at USD 360/LT for containers, USD 340/LT for Dry Bulk & USD 350/LT for Tankers.
