Minister of State for Coal, Shri Pratik Prakash Bapu Patil has informed in Rajya sabha about CIL steps to increase coal production.
The Coal India (CIL) has taken series of steps to increase coal production. These include, follow up on Environment & Forestry clearances and with the Ministry of Railways for making available rail rakes, approaching State Government for necessary assistance in land acquisition and dealing with law and order problems, regular monitoring of production in existing mines and implementation of ongoing and new projects, informed by the Minister of State for Coal, Shri Pratik Prakash Bapu Patil.
Minister said that Coal production from CIL increased from 379.46 MnT in 2007-08, (terminal year of 11th Five Year Plan) to 452.19 MnT in 2012-13 (terminal year of the 12th Plan).
The targets for coal production and achievement during the 11th Plan period are given below:

The Minister said that the main reasons for not achieving the targets include:
- Delay in forestry clearances, environment clearance etc;
- Delay in land acquisition and R & R related issues;
- Adverse law & order conditions in some of the mining areas;
- Transportation constraints in moving coal from pithead to sidings and delay in construction of rail Infrastructures in some of the major coalfields.
