Mongolia: Coal Exports Up 18% Y-o-Y in Q3 CY19

Mongolian coal exports have increased 18% on the year to 10.6 MnT during the third quarter of CY19, as against 9 MnT recorded in the year-ago period. Coal volumes, however, remained flat in comparison with the previous quarter figures wherein 10.3 MnT coal was exported.

Exports in Sep’19 fell 10% M-o-M to 3.7 MnT, but were marked 5% higher on the year from 3.54 MnT in Sep’18.

Country-wise Coal Exports: Mongolia primarily exports coal by trucking it through the Gants Mod and Ceke border crossings to China, which accounts for the lion’s share in total coal volume.

Coal intake by China stood 10.45 MnT in the third quarter of CY19, up 16% Y-o-Y from 8.99 MnT noted in Q3 CY19. The remaining volume of 0.16 MnT was taken by UK and Singapore during the quarter.

In the first 9-months of CY19 (Jan-Sep’19), Mongolian coal exports have reached 28.64 MnT, of which China’s share was marked at 28.11 MnT.
