Canadian Coal Exports Witness Modest Growth M-o-M in Aug’19

Canadian coal exports have remained almost flat m-o-m during Aug’19. Data provided by customs indicate that the country had exported 3.19 MnT coal in Aug’19 as against 3.14 MnT in Jul’19. However, export volumes were marked 14% higher on the year from 2.81 MnT in Aug’18.

Exports of Bituminous coal primarily of metallurgical grade had rebounded after falling in Jul’19, to record an increase of 3% M-o-M during Aug’19. Although, pet coke shipments had fell 10% on the month to 0.43 MnT in Aug’19.

Major Coal Importers:
Japan emerged as the largest coal buyer from Canada in Aug’19, eventually attaining a 3-month high total in the process. Japanese coal imports increased 5% M-o-M to 0.69 MnT in Aug’19, which was also 25% higher on the year from 0.55 MnT in Aug’18.

Coal imports by India surged 77% M-o-M to 0.55 MnT in Aug’19 compared with 0.31 MnT in Jul’19. Intake by the country had also jumped 3-folds from the levels attained in the year-ago period.

However, the noticeable increase in Canadian coal shipments was pulled back by the hefty decline noted in intake from South Korea and China.

South Korean coal imports from Canada decreased 16% M-o-M to 0.48 MnT in Aug’19, which was also 6% lower on the year from 0.51 MnT in Aug’18. While, coal volumes taken by China were down 48% M-o-M to 0.39 MnT during Aug’19.

In the first 8 months of CY19 (Jan-Aug’19), Canadian coal exports have reached 23.92 MnT up 9% Y-o-Y from 22.03 MnT noted in the year ago-period.
