Chinese coal production have increased 7% on the year to 316.02 MnT in Aug’19 compared with 296.6 MnT in Aug’18, as per the data provided by National Bureau of Statistics (NBS).
Despite attaining a y-o-y growth for the sixth consecutive month, coal output recorded a three month low total in Aug’19 as it fell 2% on the month from 322.22 MnT in Jul’19.
During the first 8 months of CY19 (Jan-Aug’19), China’s coal production have totaled 2409.28 MnT.
The prevailing high temperature in summer season helped to lift country’s overall electricity generation 4% Y-o-Y to 668.24 billion kilowatt-hours in Aug’19 as against 640.49 billion kilowatt-hours in Aug’18. However, the sharp increases in wind solar and nuclear power had limited the draw on coal fired-power output during the month, NBS stated.
In spite of the elevated coal output and a subdued thermal power generation, Chinese coal imports surged 15% on the year to 32.95 MnT in Aug’19. Overall imports marked in the first 8-months of CY19 stood 220.42 MnT, up 8% on the year from the levels attained in the year-ago period.
