The Ministry of Coal has transferred the Badam coal block, located in the state of Jharkhand, to India’s largest power generating company-NTPC, on 2 Sep’19.
The coal block, earlier allocated to Bihar State Power Generation Company (BSPGCL), has been given to NTPC after it acquired the Barauni thermal plant from BSPGCL in Dec’18.
The Government has recently accepted NTPC’s request to surrender the Kudanali-Luburi coal block located at Odisha allotted to it jointly with Jammu & Kashmir State Power Development Corporation Ltd (JKSPDC).
However, the count of captive blocks was kept intact after the deed of adherence for acquiring Badam coal block was signed.
At present, NTPC possesses 10 coal blocks i.e. Pakri Barwadih, Chatti Bariatu (including Chatti Bariatu-South), Kerandari, Dulanga, Talaipalli, Bhalumuda, Banai, Mandakini-B, Badam and Banhardih.
Total estimated geological reserve of these coal blocks is assessed over 7.3 BnT with a production potential of about 113 MnT per annum.
NTPC has made substantial progress in coal mining, garnering 7.31 MnT coal production from Pakri-Barwadih and Dulanga mines in the last financial year.
The company has set a target to produce 10.4 MnT of coal in FY20, and has recently entitled a new subsidiary for the sole purpose of coal mining.
