Colombia: Coal Exports Up 30% M-o-M in Jul’19

Colombian coal exports have witnessed an uptick during Jul’19 after attaining a multi-month low total in the previous month. Notably, exports during the month of Jun’19 were recorded lowest since Jan’16.

Data provided by customs indicates that coal export by Colombia stood 6.22 MnT in Jul’19, up 30% on the month from 4.77 MnT in Jun’19.

Despite hefty gain recorded on the monthly basis, Colombian coal exports remain subdued than the levels attained in the previous year. Export volumes were marked 26% lower on the year from 8.46 MnT in Jul’18.

In fact, during the first 7 months of CY19 (Jan-Jul’19), Colombian coal exports have fallen 17% Y-o-Y to 45.23 MnT against 54.79 MnT noted in Jan-Jul’18 period. Coal sales have been pressured by low prices caused by a decrease in European demand, inclement weather and judicial restrictions that have limited work at the Cerrejon mine.

Major Coal Importers:
Colombia had seen drastic fall in coal intake from its major buyer-Turkey in CY19. During the 7-month period, Turkish coal imports have shrunk to 9.73 MnT, down 21% Y-o-Y from 12.28 MnT noted in the same period last year.

For the month of Jul’19, Turkish Imports had extended its fall by attaining its lowest mark for CY19. The country had taken 0.63 MnT coal in Jul’19, down 46% M-o-M from 1.16 MnT in Jun’19, which was also 65% lower on the year from 1.81 MnT in Jul’18.

In the backdrop of decrease in coal receipt from Turkey, Colombian coal deliveries to Israel had seen remarkable growth in Jul’19. As a matter of fact, Israel had emerged as the largest coal receiver in the month with imports of 1.12 MnT coal.

Chile was the third-largest importer of Colombian coal behind Israel and Colombia. The country had received 0.61 MnT coal in Jul’19, up 24% M-o-M from 0.49 MnT in Jun’19, which was also 30% higher on the year from 0.47 MnT in Jul’18.
