According to World Steel Association, Russia’s crude steel production recorded at 17.43 MnT during Q2 CY19 as against 16.81 MnT in Q1 CY19.
Iron ore exports down 11% in Q2 CY19: Russia iron ore export recorded at 5.09 MnT in Q2 CY19, down 10.7% as against 5.7 MnT in Q1 CY19. On yearly basis, exports rise by 36.46% as compared to Q2 CY19’18 exports at 3.73 MnT.
Ukraine stood the largest importer in Q2 CY19 at 1.93 MnT, rise by 0.59 MnT (M-o-M) as against 1.34 MnT in Q1 CY19. China imports fall to 0.89 MnT in Q2 CY19 against 1.23 MnT in Q1 CY19.
Russian coal exports have dropped 4% Q-o-Q to 52.01 MnT during the second quarter of CY19 (Apr-Jun’19) compared with 54.37 MnT recorded in Q1 CY19 period.
Russian coal suppliers benefited from restrictions imposed by Chinese government on imports of Australian coal, as export shipments to China continued its rising trend on the quarter period. During Q2 CY19, coal supplies to China increased 40% Q-o-Q to 7.76 MnT compared with 5.54 MnT in Q1 CY18.
Elsewhere, limited demand from consumers in Europe and Asia-Pacific had resulted in a decline in Russian Q2 CY19 exports, which although, were slightly higher than the levels attained in the same quarter last year. Notably, Russia had exported 51.76 MnT coal in Q2 CY18.
Over the course of the first 6 months in CY19 (Jan-Jun’19), Russian coal exports have reached 106.38 MnT, up 7% Y-o-Y from 99.01 MnT in the corresponding period of CY18.
Russian ferrous exports showed a huge growth in Q2 CY’19. The country exported 1.33 MnT of ferrous scrap in Q2 CY19, rising by 80% Q-o-Q as against 0.41 MnT in Q1 CY19. On yearly premises, scrap exports decreased by 13% Y-o-Y as against 1.52 MnT of exports recorded in Q2 CY18.
Monthly exports also recorded an increase in June’19 as the country exported 0.54 MnT in the month as against 0.38 MnT in May’19. However, after completing its tenure, the clarity on the proposal of restriction on Russian scrap exports is still awaited. Better export price realizations in Turkey & South Korea could have resulted in increased exports in Q219 than domestic sales by Russian suppliers.
Country wise – Turkey remained the largest importer while its share in total Russian scrap exports stood at 54%. It imported 0.71 MnT in Q2 CY19, against 0.38 MnT in Q1 CY19, observing a rise of 90% Q-o-Q. South Korea remained at 2nd largest importers’ position with 0.22 MnT, up 47% Q-o-Q, with a share of 17%. Another top scrap importer Belarus (0.11 MnT, up 38% Q-o-Q) with an 8% of share.
Russia, registered a fall in billet exports of about 13.5% M-o-M in Q2 CY19. As per custom data maintained by SteelMint stats, the nation has exported around 3.52 MnT billet in Q2 CY19 against 4.07 MnT in Q1 CY19. Inline on yearly basis, exports decline by 16.78% in Q2 CY19 as against of 4.23 MnT in Q2 CY18.
Taiwan has imported approximately 0.93 MnT billet from Russia and maintains the top number in Q2 CY19, followed by Belgium 0.56 MnT & Mexico 0.38 MnT. And Taiwan was imported around 0.37 MnT in June 2019.
Inline Sponge iron exports decline by 53.2% M-o-M to 0.65 MnT in Q2 CY19 as against 1.39 MnT in Q1 CY19.
In addition, Pig iron exports have registered fall slightly by 4.8% q-o-q in Q2 CY19 at 1.18 MnT as against 1.24 MnT in Q1 CY19. US remain the largest buyer of Russian Pig iron with 0.59 MnT in Q2 CY19 & about 0.26 MnT in June 2019.
Russia’s finish long export recorded at 0.87 MnT in Q2 CY19, slightly fall by 5.43% as compared to 0.92 MnT in Q1 CY19.
On yearly basis, exports recorded a fall of 11.22% in Q2 CY19 as against of 0.98 MnT in Q2 CY18.
Kazakhstan stood as the largest Finish long unload country to Russia at 0.15 MnT followed by Belarus at 0.12 MnT & Kyrgyzstan at 0.06 MnT in Q2 CY19 period.
Russia’s finish flat exports inched up by 1% to 2.37 MnT in Q2 CY19 as against 2.35 MnT in Q1CY’19. Russia majorly exports flat steel products to Turkey; however market sentiments in Turkey remained dampened by the weakening of Lira against USD coupled with subdued end users demand during Apr-Jun CY19 which has impacted export volumes of Russia.
Russian Ferro alloys exports remain at firm level in Q2 CY19 & fell in Jun’19. Russian Ferro Alloys exports stood at 0.06 MnT in Jun’19. Ferro Silicon and Silico Manganese exports have remained stable. However, Ferro Chrome exports decreased from 0.03 MnT in May’19 to 0.032 MnT in Jun’19. Ferro Manganese exports also decreased significantly as compared to the previous month. Netherlands and Japan remained the top two importers for Russian Ferro Alloys.
