Taiwan: Coal Imports Up 8% Q-o-Q in Q2 CY19

Coal imports by Taiwan has increased 8% Q-o-Q during the second quarter of CY19 (Apr-Jun’19), but was still marked lower than the levels attained in the year-ago period.

Data provided by customs indicate that Taiwan has imported 17.16 MnT coal in Q2 CY19 against 15.87 MnT recorded in Q1 CY19. Import volumes had fell 8% on the year from 18.62 MnT noted in Q2 CY18.

Notably, the country has shelved proposed addition of coal-fired power plants, having listed major plans to increase gas generation and reduce coal-fired generation.

Over the course of first 6-months of CY19, Taiwan’s coal imports have remained broadly steady at 33.03 MnT compared with 33.6 MnT noted in the same period last year.

Major Coal Exporters:
Australian coal exports to Taiwan stood nearly unchanged Q-o-Q, marked at 8.68 MnT in Q2 CY19 against 8.6 MnT in Q1 CY19. Exports volumes had decreased 3% Y-o-Y from 8.91 MnT in Q2 CY18.

Indonesian coal exports grew 16% Q-o-Q to 5.04 MnT in Q2 CY19, which were also 20% higher on the year from 4.19 MnT in Q2 CY18.

Coal supplies from Russia made a strong growth on the quarter, rising 91% to 2.6 MnT in Q2 CY19 from 1.36 MnT in Q1 CY19. However, coal volumes had fell 24% Y-o-Y from 3.4 MnT in Q2 CY18.

Apart from the major suppliers, Taiwan has witnessed adverse coal sourcing from South Africa and Canada during CY19.

Canadian coal exports to Taiwan was recorded 29% lower on the quarter at 0.4 MnT in Q2 CY19, which had also fallen 52% Y-o-Y from 0.83 MnT in Q2 CY18.

In addition, coal supplies from South Africa decreased 63% Q-o-Q and 80% Y-o-Y to 0.16 MnT in Q2 CY19. Notably, the entire volume accumulated for the quarter was received solely in the month of Jun’19, that too after a gap of 4-months.
