Indian Power Generation

India: Conventional Power Generation Down 4% M-o-M in Jul’19

Indian power generation from conventional sources has decreased 4% on the month during Jul’19, but was recorded at par with the target set for the month.

Amid a slowdown in power demand as a result of the ongoing monsoon, Power ministry had cut-short the generation schedule for the month of Jul’19, wherein the output from thermal sources was particularly lowered. On the other hand, target for hydro and nuclear sources were marked stiffer during the month.

Tentative data provided by Power ministry indicates that power generation for Jul’19 stood 108.37 BU (Billion Units) against the set target of 108.76 BU. Output volumes had fell m-o-m from 112.83 BU noted in Jun’19, but increased 6% Y-o-Y from 102.7 BU in Jul’18.

A source-wise break-up of power generation shows that output from thermal plants declined 7% M-o-M to 87.38 BU in Jul’19 compared with 94.19 BU in Jun’19. Generation volume were 6% higher on the year from 82.29 BU recorded in Jul’18.

Higher availability of water resources during monsoon boost hydro power output which had grew 10% M-o-M to 15.82 BU in Jul’19.

There was a remarkable growth seen in Nuclear power output, which had breached the 4 BU mark for the first time since Jan’18. Generation from nuclear plants rose 17% Y-o-Y to 4.23 BU in Jul’19, also increasing 8% M-o-M from 3.9 BU in Jun’19.

Remaining output of 0.94 BU was imported from Bhutan during the month.

Muted Off-take Restrained Growth in Power Plant Coal Stock

Coal-fired power generation had witnessed a decline of 8% M-o-M to 80.67 BU in Jul’19 compared with 87.38 BU in Jun’19, but that didn’t help the cause for a rise in power plants’ coal stock.

Data provided by CEA indicate that the available coal stock at the plants (having coal linkages) was recorded at 23.53 MnT as on 18 Aug’19, down 8% M-o-M recorded from 25.595 MnT in the month-ago period.

Notably, CIL’s coal off-take has remain subdued in FY20. During the month of Jul’19, coal dispatch was down 3% Y-o-Y to 46.82 MnT. Over the course of first 4 months of FY20 (Apr-Jul’19), dispatch were marked 0.8% lower Y-o-Y at 200.11 MnT.
