Coal Imports at Major Indian Ports

India: Coal Traffic Handled at Major Ports Up 2% Y-o-Y in Q1 FY20

According to the data provided by Indian Port Association (IPA), coal imports at country’s 12 major ports have increased 2% on the year to 42.187 MnT during the first quarter of FY20 as against 41.333 MnT in Q1 FY19.

The 12 major ports of India listed under IPA include: Kolkata (Kolkata and Haldia dock both combined), Paradip, Visakhapatnam, Kamajar (Ennore), Chennai, V O Chidambaranar, Cochin, New Mangalore, Mormugao, Mumbai, J.N.P.T and Kandla.

It is to be noted that total import volumes had registered a 15% growth during the first quarter of FY19, as compared with the same period of FY18. However, the growth has been only marginal this year, driven by subdued intake of thermal coal shipments.

A grade-wise break-up of imports arriving at the ports indicate that intake of thermal & steam coal had fell 5% Y-o-Y to 27.064 MnT during Q1 FY20 period. Contrarily, thermal coal imports had grown by a whopping 19% in the corresponding year-ago quarter period.

Apparently, an improved coal stock level build-up at the power plants has lowered the need of imported thermal coal this term.

On the other hand, Coking and other coal shipments had jumped 17% Y-o-Y to 15.123 MnT in Q1 FY20 compared with 12.939 MnT in Q1 FY19.

Major Coal Receivers:
Paradip port was the largest coal receiver during the quarter period. The port had registered coal intake of 10.998 MnT, down 7% Y-o-Y from 11.822 MnT in Q1 FY19.

Deendayal port (erstwhile known as Kandla port) came behind second with 5.941 MnT coal receipt, followed by Kolkata, Ennore and Vizag port.

Out of the 12 ports, only 4 of them had noted a positive growth in coal intake taken during the quarter period namely- Mormugao, Deendayal, Kolkata and Mumbai. JNPT, Chennai and Cochin ports had not received any coal shipment in the period.
