Fire mishap that took place at Bhushan Steel Ltd’s plant on Wednesday, based in Dhenkanal district of Odisha, which claimed several lives, has become a political issue in the state
With the Bhushan accident has become a large political issue in Odisha, the state government has signalled that very tough action would be taken against the company authorities. Even the Chief Secretary Mr J. K. Mohapatra has refused to meet a team of senior officials of the company yesterday.
According to reports the Chief Minister Mr. Naveen Pattnaik has taken the issue very seriously and has directed the law enforcing agencies to fast track the investigations and take action against those responsible. A two member team of IIT Kharagpur will investigate the root cause of the accident and the Director, Factory and Boiler will inspect the Blast Furnace-1. On the other hand, the Odisha Pollution Control Board (OPCB) has indicated that a case will be registered against the company for operating the Blast Furnace-2 without its approvals.
” Consent to Operate was not given to Bhushan Steel for operating the Blast Furnace-2 and we are contemplating to take legal actions against the company” said Lalit Kumar Tiwari, Member Secretary, OPCB.
As per sources, the promoter and Managing Director of the company Niraj Singhal had forced the engineers to start operation of the Blast Furnace-2 on 12th of this month even as the technicians had informed him that it was not ready for operation and would need one more week to be ready.
