Taiwan: Coal Imports Up 52% M-o-M in Mar’19

Taiwan’s coal import have rebounded after falling in Feb’19 to record 52% growth on monthly basis in Mar’19.

Data provided by Taiwanese customs indicate that the country had imported 5.98 MnT coal in Mar’19 against 3.94 MnT in Feb’19, which was also 16% higher on the year from 5.16 MnT in Mar’18.

Taiwan’s coal intake from its major supplier-Australia rose to a 9-month high total in Mar’19, recorded at 3.41 MnT. Import volumes were also 32% higher on the year from 2.58 MnT in Mar’18.

Supplies from Indonesia were marked 84% higher on the month at 1.62 MnT in Mar’19, also increasing 21% Y-o-Y from 1.34 MnT in Mar’18.

Russian coal exports to Taiwan dropped 35% M-o-M to 0.41 MnT in Mar’19, which was also down 43% Y-o-Y.

It is pertinent to note that share of coal in terms of Taiwan’s sourcing from Australia and Indonesia during Q1 CY19, has increased y-o-y from the corresponding quarter of CY18; while Russian share has fallen during the period.

Notably, Russian coal exports to Taiwan has fallen 35% Y-o-Y to 1.36 MnT in the first quarter of CY19.

Canadian coal exports to Taiwan jumped 5-folds to 0.41 MnT in Mar’19, while China with supplies of 0.12 MnT was the other noticeable coal exporter during the month.

Taiwan’s coal import has reached 15.98 MnT in the first quarter of CY19 (Jan’19-Mar’19), up 6% Y-o-Y from 14.98 MnT in Q1 CY18.
