USA Steel Imports Statistics in Q1 CY’19

USA iron ore Imports Down 23% Q-o-Q in Q1 CY19- USA’s iron ore imports recorded at 1.4 MnT in Q1 CY’19 down 23% as against 1.83 MnT in Q4 CY18.

However, on monthly basis imports picked up by 8% to 0.42 MnT in Mar’19 as against 0.39 MnT in Feb’19.

On yearly basis, exports moved up 6% as compared to 0.45 MnT in Mar’18.

Country wise USA iron ore imports in Q1 CY’19- Brazil stood as largest exporter of iron ore to USA at 0.81 MnT, down 31% as against 1.17 MnT in Q4 CY18. Brazilian exports dropped for the quarter amid Vale dam rupture in Jan’19 which led to closure of numerous mines and dams in Brazil.

Canada exports recorded at 0.21 MnT followed by Sweden at 0.20 MnT and Russia at 0.13 MnT in Q1 CY’19.

Meanwhile United States iron ore output inched down by 1% to 22.23 MnT as against 22.53 MnT in Q4 CY18.

USA pig iron imports decline by 18% Q-o-Q in Q1 CY’19- Nation’s pig iron imports tumbled by 18% in Q1 CY’19 to 1.37 MnT against 1.68 MnT in preceding quarter.

Surge in export offers on account of rising scrap prices and reduced availability of pig iron lead to decline in nation’s imports volumes.

Whereas on monthly premise nation’s pig iron import stood at 0.47 MnT in Mar’19, spiked 62% from 0.29 MnT in Feb’19.

Meanwhile on yearly basis nation’s pig iron imports increased by 9% in Mar’19 as compared to 0.43 MnT in corresponding month previous year.

Country wise USA pig iron imports in Q1 CY’19- USA imported 0.57 MnT of pig iron from Russia in Q1 CY’19, slashed by 39% against 0.93 MnT in Q4 CY’18.

USA also imported pig iron from Brazil 0.39 MnT followed by Ukraine 0.32 MnT, Italy 0.05 MnT and South Africa at 0.04 MnT in Q1 CY’19.

USA billet imports upsurge by 16% Q-o-Q in Q1 CY’19- USA’s billet imports registered a surge by 16% to 1.36 MnT in Q1 CY’19 which was 1.17 MnT in previous quarter.

Nation’s billet imports reported surge largely from Brazil as USA have enforced quota in lieu of trade tariffs @25% under Section 232.

Meanwhile on monthly basis nation’s billet imports marginally declined by 4% from 0.46 MnT in Feb’19 to 0.44 MnT in Mar’19.

Whereas on yearly premise nation’s billet imports slashed by 21% in Mar’19 from 0.56 MnT in Mar’18.

Country wise USA billet imports in Q1 CY’19- USA’s billet imports from Brazil accounted for 0.90 MnT in Q1 Cy’19, spiked by 64% as against 0.55 MnT in preceding quarter.

Nation’s billet imports from Russia was recorded at 0.29 MnT followed by Mexico at 0.16 MnT in Q1 CY’19.

USA ferrous scrap imports decline 5% Q-o-Q in Q1’CY19- USA imported 1.15 MnT of ferrous scrap in Q1 CY’19, fell by 5% Q-o-Q against 1.21 MnT in Q4 CY’18.

On monthly basis, scrap imports to USA witnessed a rise of 6%, importing 0.35 MnT in Mar’19 as against 0.33 MnT in Feb’19.

On yearly premise ferrous scrap imports rose 17% as against 0.98 MnT in Q1 CY’18.

Domestic scrap demand remained strong and semi-finish steel imports remained supportive resulting to marginal fall in scrap imports in Q1 2019.

Country wise USA ferrous scrap imports in Q1 CY’19- Canada remained the largest supplier occupying a share of 66% in total scrap imports of USA in Q1 CY’19. It supplied 0.76 MnT in Q1 CY’19, witnessing a drop of 16% Q-o-Q from Q4 CY’18.

Followed by other prominent suppliers like Mexico 0.17 MnT and Netherlands 0.06 MnT and Sweden at 0.09 MnT.

USA finish long imports ascend by 24% Q-o-Q in Q1 CY’19- Nation’s finish long steel imports upsurged by 24% in Q1 CY’19 to 0.89 MnT which was 0.72 MnT in the previous quarter.

Meanwhile imports on monthly premise registered an increase by 12% in Mar’19 and stood at 0.28 MnT in comparison to 0.25 MnT in preceding month.

Whereas on yearly basis nation’s imports plunged by 20% in Mar’19 which was 0.35 MnT in corresponding month previous year.

Country-wise USA finish long imports in Q1 CY’19- Nation’s finish long imports from Canada accounted for 0.12 MnT in Q1 CY’19 as compared to 0.13 MnT in the previous quarter.

Following this imports from Mexico were 0.11 MnT, Italy 0.09 MnT, Spain 0.08 MnT, Bulgaria 0.06 MnT while South Korea, Germany and Japan at 0.05 MnT each in Q1 CY’19.

USA also imported finished long steel from Brazil, Luxembourg and China in smaller quantities in current quarter.

USA flat steel imports inch up by 1% Q-o-Q in Q1 CY’19- Nation’s flat steel imports stood at 3.97 MnT in Q1 CY’19 inched up by 1% as compared to 3.94 MnT in the previous quarter.

On monthly basis USA’s flat steel imports increase by 13% to 1.25 MnT in Mar’19 which was 1.11 MnT in preceding month.

Whereas on monthly premise nation’s imports registered a plunge by 26% in Mar’19 in comparison to 1.68 MnT in corresponding month of previous year.

Country-wise USA flat steel imports in Q1 CY’19- USA imports flat steel majorly from Canada and stood at 0.91 MnT in Q1 CY’19; marginally fell by 5% from 0.96 MnT in preceding quarter.

Other major countries exporting flat steel to USA were South Korea 0.57 MnT, Mexico 0.37 MnT, Taiwan and Germany at 0.21 MnT in Q1 CY’19.

Following this USA also imported flat steel products from Vietnam, Japan and Thailand in smaller quantities in Q1 CY’19.

USA Ferro Alloys imports drop by 12% Q-o-Q in Q1 CY’19- Nation’s ferro alloys imports slashed by 12% in Q1 CY’19 to 0.19 MnT which was 0.21 MnT in previous quarter.

Whereas on monthly premises United state’s Ferro Alloys imports plunged by 29% from 0.09 MnT in Feb’19 to 0.07 MnT in Mar’19.

Meanwhile on yearly basis nation’s ferro alloys imports declined by 13% in Mar’19 in comparison with 0.08 MnT in Mar’18.

Australia and Norway were the leading exporter of Ferro Alloys to United States. Following this,South Africa,Georgia Malaysia,Mexico and South Korea.

USA graphite electrode imports remain stable Q-o-Q in Q1 CY’19- Nation’s graphite electrode import volumes stood at 0.03 MnT in Q1 CY’19, stable over previous quarter.

Also nation’s graphite electrode imports accounted for 0.01 MnT in Mar’19 and remained stable on both monthly and yearly premise.
