India’s thermal coal imports have increased by 10.22% on a month-to-month basis in April to 19.62 million tonnes (MnT), as compared to 17.80 MnT in March, as per the latest vessel lineup data compiled by CoalMint Research.
Moreover, on a year-on-year basis, the country’s non-coking imports have surged by a whopping 44.87% in Apr’19 against 13.54 MnT recorded in Apr’18.

Country Wise India Non-Coking Coal Import in Apr’19:

A country-wise break-up of the monthly import data reveals that the major proportion of the Indian non-coking coal import shipments continued to be originated from Indonesia, constituting the highest share of around 64%.
Moreover, Indonesian non-coking coal exports to India rose by 7.3% M-o-M to 12.60 MnT in Apr’19 against 11.75 MnT in Mar’19.
More importantly, South African non-coking coal supplies to India rose by 19.4% M-o-M to 4.25 MnT in Apr’19 from 3.56 MnT in Mar’19.
Furthermore, Indian thermal coal imports from USA rose by 16.9% to 1.07 MnT in Apr’19, against 0.91 MnT in Mar’19.
Contrarily, India’s non-coking coal imports from Australia fell by 14.3% M-o-M to 0.56 MnT in Apr’19 compared with 0.65 MnT in Mar’19; while imports from Russia dropped by 5.7% M-o-M to 0.40 MnT in Apr’19 compared with 0.43 MnT in Mar’19.
Imports from Mozambique jumped by 35.8% M-o-M to 0.29 MnT in Apr’19 against 0.21 MnT in Mar’19.
