CIL: Coal Production Up 1% Y-o-Y in Apr’19

Coal India Ltd (CIL) has reported coal production of 45.29 MnT in Apr’19 thereby recording a subtle rise of 1% Y-o-Y as against 44.86 MnT in Apr’18.

Production had reasonably fell down 43% on the month, after the coal company had managed an staggering output of 79.2 MnT in Mar’19 in order to get closer to its annual target of FY19.

Nevertheless, a comparatively lower coal stock maintained at the end of FY19, has indeed helped CIL to better execute its production schedule. Notably, the output in Apr’19 was the highest CIL had attained in the corresponding month of past 6 fiscals .

CIL’s Coal Offtake:

CIL’s coal offtake increased 3% Y-o-Y to 52.35 MnT in Apr’19 compared with 51.01 MnT in Apr’19, but was 12% lower on the month from 59.6 MnT in Mar’19.

Indian power sector remain in imminent need of coal to tackle the demand for electricity during summer season.

Data provided by CEA indicate that combined coal stock at plants (having coal linkages) had swelled to 31.594 MnT at end of Apr’19. However, there remain 27 plants which were having coal stock lesser than 7 days.

To meet the coal requirement, CIL had liquidated its excess coal stock in Apr’19. It is pertinent to note that offtake during the month was nearly 16% higher than the corresponding production.

Subsidiary-wise Performance in Apr’19:
Mahanadi Coalfields Ltd (MCL), emerged as the largest coal producer in Apr’19, with output of 11.74 MnT rising 10% Y-o-Y.

SECL slipped to the second-spot, with output of 11.11 MnT in Apr’19. SECL, along with BCCL, CCL and NECL had reported a y-o-y fall in output during the month.

In terms of coal offtake, SECL was the highest coal supplier amongst the 8-subsidiaries of CIL, despite recording a slight fall in dispatches y-o-y in Apr’19.

MCL occupied the second spot with dispatch of 12.53 MnT coal during the month.
