Indian Iron Ore Production: FY19 vs FY18

As per provisional data maintained with SteelMint, India’s iron ore output is expected to have touched around 204 MnT in FY19 against 201 MnT in previous fiscal.

Odisha’s iron ore production expected to increase by 9% to around 111 MnT in FY19-:  Odisha – India’s largest iron ore producing state has recorded an increase of 12% between Apr-Feb’19 to 98.6 MnT as against 88.05 MnT in the same period last fiscal FY’18. Rungta Mines – India’s largest private merchant miner has produced iron ore between Apr- Feb in FY’19 at around 21.72 MnT (down by 14%), Essel Mining & Industries increased its production by more than two-fold to 8.28 and that from Serajuddin Mines fell by 24% to 6.86 MnT during Apr-Feb in FY’19.

Orissa Mining Corp recorded a sharp increase in its iron ore output to 11 MnT in FY19.

NMDC – India’s largest iron ore mine production in FY19 recorded at 32.47 MnT despite multiple challenges like closure at Donimalai mines for 5 months, nil exports till Aug’18, highest rainfall in Bailadila sector and poor offtake in Karnataka sector for the first quarter. Out of total iron ore production, NMDC (C.G) produces 23.39 MnT and remaining 9.08 MnT from NMDC Karnataka mines. The previous year, figures were as 23.57 MnT and 12.01 MnT respectively. This is the third consecutive year in a row the company has crossed production and sales 30 MnT mark.

Goa iron ore production remains nil –Supreme Court of India on 7th Feb ‘18 said that the 88 iron ore mine leases who were granted second renewal in violation in decisions and directed to stop all mining operations with effect from 16 Mar’18 until fresh environmental clearances are granted. Operations from Goa mines have been on halt since Mar’18.

Vedanta’s iron ore production from Karnataka jumped two-fold to 4.1 MnT in FY19 against 2.2 MnT in the previous year.
