According to the data provided by Indian Port Association (IPA), coal imports at the country’s 12 major ports have increased 11% Y-o-Y to 161.351 MnT in FY19 against 145.603 MnT in FY18.
The 12 major ports of India listed under IPA include: Kolkata (Kolkata and Haldia dock both combined), Paradip, Visakhapatnam, Kamajar (Ennore), Chennai, V O Chidambaranar, Cochin, New Mangalore, Mormugao, Mumbai, J.N.P.T and Kandla.
Demand for coal in power and steel sector has indeed raised the volume of coal arriving at the ports. Notably, coal shipments had accounted for 23% of the total traffic handled in FY19, which was recorded at 699.048 MnT.
Moreover, coal was the second largest commodity being handled at the major ports after crude oil and its by-products.
During FY19, shipments of both thermal and coking coal had increased on the year.
Imports of thermal and steam grades of coal grew 9% Y-o-Y to 103.843 MnT, the growth rate was further outpaced by coking and other coal shipments which had increased by 14% on the year to 57.508 MnT in FY19.
Among the individual ports, Paradip remained the highest coal receiver, accounting for 28% of the total coal volume in FY19.
Ennore was the second-largest coal receiver, followed by Kolkata, Kandla, Vizag and V.O Chidambaranar port.
No coal was received at JNPT and Chennai ports. While among the remaining ports, only Mormugao, New Mangalore and Cochin ports have recorded a fall in yearly coal intake.
Monthly Arrival of Coal:
Coal shipments arriving at the major ports have hit a 5-month high during Mar’19.
Coal imports increased 14% on the month to 14.377 MnT in Mar’19, of which thermal and steam coal shipments totaled 9.101 MnT and remaining 5.276 MnT comprised of coking and other coal shipments.
