Taiwan’s billet import plunged by 40% M-o-M in Jan’19, country’s custom data reported.
The nation has imported about 253,277 MT billet in the month of Jan’19 against 423,606 MT in Dec’18, decline by 40.2% M-o-M. Prior to this, the billet imports rise by 25.95% M-o-M in Dec’18. While, on yearly basis in Jan’19 imports rise by 6.06% against 238,783 MT in Jan’18.
Further in the month of Jan’19, no major billet imports were recorded from Malaysia, Oman, China & Iran to Taiwan. Billet imports from Japan also decline by 70% M-o-M & stood at 49,397 MT in Jan’19.
Considering financial year 2019 (Apr-Jan), imports rise by 14.6% to 3,179,417 MT against same preceding FY18 at 2,772,953 MT.
Japan remained in the top list of billet imports (Apr-Jan) in Taiwan with a contribution of about 1,396,384 MT (43.92%); followed by Russia 912,021 MT (28.69%), Vietnam 269,532 MT (8.48%) & Iran 106,390 MT (3.35%).
As per the SteelMint’s assessment in FY19 (Apr-Jan), the crude steel production of Taiwan was around 18,915,000 MT, and in FY18 in the same duration it stood at 19,275,000 MT.
— Taiwan scrap imports fall by 19.4% & stood at 258,324 MT in Jan’19 as against 320,576 MT in Dec’18. Price assessment for US origin HMS (80:20) stood at USD 305/MT CNF Taiwan.
— Last assessment of global billet export offers are hovering at USD 480-490/MT FoB China & USD 455-465/MT FoB Ukraine.
