Turkey – the world’s 9th largest steel importer, in 2018 the country has imported about 13.75 MnT of steel, declined by 8.33 percent from 15 MnT in 2017.
In 2018, Turkey majorly imported Semi finished (Billet) from Russia around 51.98%, Finished long from Spain at 28.87% & Finished Flat from Russia at 29.75%.
Coming to Jan 2019, Turkey imported around 0.94 MnT of steel (Semi finished, Finished Long & Flat)- an 25.55 percent incline from 0.75 MnT in Dec’18. In line in Jan’19, Turkey’s major Semi Finished, Finish long & Flat steel import seen from Russia (79.57%), Iran (43.20%) & Russia (41.07%), respectively.
Turkey Iron Ore Imports Fell 8% in Jan’19. The tenth largest importer of Iron ore, Turkey has recorded 8% fall in iron ore imports at 0.95 MnT in Jan’19 as against 1.02 MnT in Dec’18. On yearly basis, the imports increased 2% against 0.92 MnT in Jan’18.
Turkey’s crude steel production dropped 11% in Jan’19 to 2.57 MnT as compared to 2.89 MnT a month ago. The output fell 19% as against 3.19 MnT in Jan’18.
Turkey’s coal imports had dropped 9% M-o-M to 3.44 MnT in Jan’19, following a fall in coal supplies from its major exporter-Colombia. Coking coal imports, in particular, had decreased 56% M-o-M to 0.27 MnT in Jan’19.
Turkey’s scrap import recorded at 1,236,445 MT in Jan’19, down 24% M-o-M as against 1,623,765 MT in Dec’18. On yearly premises, imports declined 26% Y-o-Y as against 1,678,885 MT in Jan’18. Fall in scrap imports could be attributed to lowering of scrap purchases from steel mills towards calendar year-end in Dec’18 amid low availability and seasonal concerns. Also, finish steel demand remained limited.
The average price of US origin HMS 1&2 (80:20) was recorded at USD 298/MT, CFR Turkey in Dec’19 which moved down to USD 290/MT, CFR level in Jan’19.
United States remained the largest scrap exporter (214,398 MT, down 26%) occupying 17% share in total imports followed by Netherlands (192,040 MT, up 44%), Russia (181,675 MT, down 17%), Germany (155,759 MT, up 143%) and UK (100,031 MT, down 23%) on monthly premises in Jan’19.
Turkey Flat Steel Import Increases Twofold in Jan’19. Nation’s flat steel imports stood at 0.50 MnT in Jan’19 increased by 52% on monthly basis against 0.33 MnT in Dec’18.
Thus to protect the share of domestic steelmakers Turkey government imposed import duties on HRC to 9% and CRC to 7% including PPGI producers and HDG producers which is effective from 1st Jan’19.
Whereas on yearly basis nation’s exports volume fell by 28% to 0.5 MnT in Jan’19 against 0.69 MnT in Jan’18.
Country wise Turkey Flat Steel Imports in Jan’19 – The major exporting nations included Russia at 0.21 MnT, Netherlands 0.04 MnT, Ukraine 0.04 MnT followed by France 0.04 MnT and Brazil 0.03 MnT in Jan’19.
Semi Finished Imports in Turkey decline marginally by around 1% M-o-M in Jan’19. As per the custom, the nation has imported about 270,084 MT Billet in Jan’19, plunge by 2% M-o-M as against 275,100 MT in Dec’18. While on yearly basis, imports decline by 43% & stood at 470,533 MT in Jan’18.
While Russia stands out to be the largest billet exporter to Turkey, exporting 231,047 MT in Jan’19, followed by Ukraine (26,970 MT), Georgia (6,901 MT) & Azerbaijan (1,954 MT). Inline, imports from Ukraine also decline by 58.49% M-o-M. And Billet imports from Brazil & Egypt to Turkey has recorded nil against the last month.
Further, Pig iron imports slightly rise by 2.8% in Jan’19 & stood at 92,962 MT.
Turkey Finish Long steel imports reach six months high in Jan’19. As per the custom data, the nation has imported about 74,946 MT Finish long steel in Jan’19 and reached to six month high since Jul’18 as per data retained by SteelMint and on monthly premises it surged by 56.19% against 47,983 MT in Dec’18.
Import volume have been surged up due to reasonable prices offering by Iran and registered at 32,377 MT in Jan’19 elongated by 65% against 19,633 MT in Dec’18 and overall proportionate at 43.2%.
Turkey Ferro Alloy imports rise- On monthly analysis it was learned from the custom that total Ferro Alloy import incline by 21.1% M-o-M & stood at 21,511 MT in Jan’19. Ferro Silico Manganese import reported a gain of 32.8% M-o-M at 18,584 MT as against 13,994 MT in Dec’18.
Turkey Graphite Electrode imports fall by 46.1% in Jan’19 & recorded 2 month low at 1,727 MT. And imports from France & Germany reported at 550 MT & 390 MT.
