Turkey’s coal imports have fallen 9% m-o-m to record a 5-month low total during Jan’19.
As per the data provided by Turkish customs, the country has imported 3.44 MnT coal in Jan’19 against 3.79 MnT in Dec’18. Imports were also 6% lower on the year compared with 3.67 MnT in Jan’18.
The decline in Turkey’s monthly coal intake came in parts due to a subdued export from its major suppliers-Colombia, US and Australia.
A grade-wise breakup indicates that Turkey’s coking coal sourcing had decreased following a lower intake from US and Australia.
While non-coking coal imports had remain almost stable M-o-M, marked at 2.78 MnT in Jan’19. Coking coal imports had fell 56% on the month to 0.27 MnT in Jan’19.
There was also a decline in Pet coke and Anthracite imports, which had fell 15% and 40% on the month, to 0.22 MnT and 0.06 MnT respectively in Jan’19.
Met coke shipments, on the other hand, had increased 83% M-o-M to 0.11 MnT in Jan’19.

Major Coal Exporters:
Colombian coal exports to Turkey dropped to its lowest total since Apr’18, recorded at 1.31 MnT in Jan’19. Exports were down 24% on the month and 16% on the year.
Russian coal exports increased 12% M-o-M to 1.19 MnT in Jan’19, which was also 3% higher on the year from 1.15 MnT in Jan’18.
South Korea witnessed a remarkable growth of 167% on the month to supply 0.48 MnT coal in Jan’19.
Among the major suppliers, US coal exports decreased 44% on the month to 0.19 MnT, while Australian export was down 81% on the month to 0.08 MnT in Jan’19.
