Indian coal mining giant, Coal India Ltd (CIL) , has reported production of 57.2 MnT coal in Jan’19, thereby attaining new high for the FY19.
Coal production in Jan’19 had increased 6% on the month from 54.13 MnT in Dec’18.
The coal company has a record of posting higher output towards the fiscal end, as it aims to achieve its annual targets. However, output volumes have somewhat been subdued on the y-o-y basis, for the past few months.
After ending the 16-month rising streak noted on the y-o-y basis in Dec’18, CIL’s production in Jan’19 was only marginally higher compared with the levels seen in Jan’18.
Nevertheless, total production in the first 10 months of FY19 (Apr’18-Jan’19) has increased 7% Y-o-Y to 469.65 MnT compared with 440.60 MnT recorded in the same period of FY18.
Coal Dispatch in Jan’19:
CIL’s coal dispatch had fallen slightly on the month, marked at 52.44 MnT in Jan’19 which was also 2% lower on the year from 53.7 MnT in Jan’18.
Providing a sigh of relief, an improved coal stock at power station has certainly eased off pressure from CIL to deliver more coal.
As per the data provided by CEA, available coal stock at the power plants (having coal linkages) had increased 23% M-o-M to 20.868 MnT as on 4 Feb’19. Besides, number of plants having critical stock level have also been reduced from 11 to 5, over the month.
CIL’s total dispatch in the 10-month period of FY19 had seen a jump of 5% Y-o-Y to 497.04 MnT.
Subsidiary-wise Performance:
SECL remained the largest coal producer, with an output of 13.58 MnT in Jan’19. MCL came behind second at 13.23 MnT.
All the 8 coal producing units of CIL had posted an increase in production on the monthly basis; but only ECL, CCL, NCL and WCL had seen their production rising y-o-y in Jan’19.
In terms of coal dispatch, supplies from SECL fell 1% on the month to 12.77 MnT in Jan’19, which was accompanied by a decline from MCL and NCL. Remaining subsidiaries had posted an increase in monthly coal dispatch.
