According to the vessel line-up data compiled by CoalMint Research, Pakistan’s coal import have continued its rising trend for the third straight month in Jan’19.
The country’s import grew 9% M-o-M to 1,296,707 MT in Jan’19 compared with 1,185,179 MnT in Dec’18, which was also 29% higher on the year compared with 1,009,107 MT in Jan’18.
Preliminary data shows that the level of imports taken by the major coal consuming sectors-Power and Cement, had increased in Jan’19. Together they had acquired more than 80% of the total coal.
Among the various end users, only textile and chemical industries coal sourcing had fallen during the month, noting a decline of 78% and 23% respectively.
Besides, coal imports by traders were up 14% M-o-M to 151,100 MT n Jan’19.

Major Coal Suppliers:
South Africa remains the major coal supplier to Pakistan. The country had exported 856,805 MT coal in Jan’19, up 22% M-o-M from 704,319 MT in Dec’18.
Coal supplies from its second-largest exporter- Indonesia, had fell 30% M-o-M to 334,505 MT in Jan’19.
In addition, Pakistan had also received its first coal shipment from Mozambique (50,053 MT) and Russia (55,344 MT), after a 3-4 month gap.
Pakistan’s total coal imports had registered a remarkable growth of 37% Y-o-Y in CY18, and is envisaged to continue the trend, given the planned expansion of cement manufacturers and coal-based power plants scheduled to come online in a couple of years.
