According to the recent customs data, Turkey flat steel exports which include 7208 (HR coils /Plates), 7209 (CR coils), 7225 (Electrical sheets), 7210/7212(GP/GC) witnessed significant increase by 34% in CY’18 to 7.53 MnT which was 5.6 MnT in CY’17.
As per the market reports, the country has successfully passed 2018 which was marked by the protectionist measures since Asian markets showed interest in Turkey steel market.
Meanwhile on yearly basis nation’s flat steel exports surged by 47% to 0.87 MnT in Dec’18 against 0.59 MnT in Dec’17.
However the same fell by 6% on monthly basis in Dec’18 against 0.93 MnT in Nov’18.
Meanwhile, The European Commission’s has extended its steel import restrictions until July 2021 to counter concerns of cheap steel flooding into European Union. For Turkey’s vast steel sector the caps could prove particularly painful as the European Unioin has given additional “country-specific” quotas.
Meanwhile Turkish steel mills already weighing under the burden of U.S. tariffs since nation has imposed 50% of tariffs on imports of steel to USA from Turkey.
Thus nation’s flat steel exports may decline in CY19 amid imposed quotas from Europe and protectionist measures from USA.

Country-Wise Turkey Flat Steel Exports in CY’18- Italy being the major importer of Turkey procured 1.52 MnT accounting for a share of 20% in CY’18.
Second major importing nation was Spain at 0.93 MnT occupied the share of 12.38% MnT in CY’18.
Other major importing nations were United States at 0.72 MnT (9.59%), Belguim at 0.58 MnT (7.67%), Romania at 0.54 MnT (7.24%) followed by United KIngdom at 0.40 MnT (5.31%), Portugal at 0.29 MnT (3.90%) and Canada at 0.29 MnT (3.88%) in CY18.
