Russia: Coal Exports Up 31% M-o-M in Nov’18

Russian coal exports have increased 31% M-o-M to 20.08 MnT in Nov’18 compared with 15.31 MnT in Oct’18, which was also 9% higher on the year compared with 18.39 MnT in Nov’17.

Russian coal market had been benefitted to produce and export more coal to the seaborne destinations, driven by the higher non-coking coal prices in the Atlantic and Pacific markets during CY18.

Accordingly, exports of non-coking coal from the country has increased 6% Y-o-Y to 133.18 MnT in the first 11 months of CY18 (Jan’18-Nov’18) compared with 125.9 MnT recorded in the same period of CY17.

Non-coking coal accounts for more than 70% of the total coal exported out of the country.

On the other hand, net coal exports in CY18 have overtaken previous year’s total by Nov’18, and is on course to attain new highs.

As per the data provided by Russian customs the country has exported 184.73 MnT coal in the 11-month period of CY18, while a total of 184.2 MnT was exported in the entire of CY17.

Grade-wise Coal Exports in Nov’18:
Exports of non-coking, coking and anthracite coal all had rebounded after falling in Oct’18 to post growth in Nov’18.

Non-coking coal had increased 41% M-o-M to 13.6 MnT in Nov’18, against 9.66 MnT in Oct’18.

Anthracite coal exports attained the highest monthly total for CY18, were recorded at 3.06 MnT in Nov’18. Coking coal was marked slightly behind at 2.96 MnT.

Exports of Met coke and Pet coke were down on the month.

Major Coal Importers:
South Korea re-emerged as the largest coal receiver from Russia. The country had imported 2.54 MnT coal in Nov’18, up 30% M-o-M from 1.95 MnT in Oct’18.

Japan and Germany, were the second and third-largest importer in Nov’18. Notably, both these countries had attained their respective highest monthly total for CY18 in Nov’18.

Last month’s top coal receiver, Ukraine, had witnessed a 36% drop in coal sourcing during Nov’18, whom along with China were the only countries to record decline on the monthly basis.

Poland, Netherlands, Turkey, Taiwan, Latvia and the UK were among the other major coal receivers from Russia in Nov’18.

Russian Coal Imports:

Russian coal imports in Nov’18 increased 6% M-o-M to 1.64 MnT, but was 20% lower on the year compared with 2.05 MnT in Nov’17.

Total imports in the 11-month period of CY18 has fallen 11% Y-o-Y to 17.57 MnT, with major quantity being sourced from Kazakhstan (13.59 MnT).
