Coal exports from Canada have recovered after falling in Oct’18, to achieve 31% rise on the month in Nov’18.
According to the data provided by customs, the country had exported 3.05 MnT coal in Nov’18 against 2.32 MnT in Oct’18, which was also 43% higher on the year from 2.13 MnT in Nov’18.
Trade deficit of the country with the world widened to Canadian 2.1 Billion Dollar (equivalent to US 1.6 Billion Dollar) in Nov’18, as exports fell for a fourth consecutive month, according to the government data.
Crude oil exports led the decrease, down 17.7% in large part due to lower prices. However, the drop was partially offset by higher exports of coal to South Korea, China and Vietnam in Nov’18.
A grade-wise break-up of coal exports indicates that Bituminous coal and Pet coke were the only noticeable coal grades shipped out of the country in Nov’18. Bituminous coal exports increased 54% M-o-M to 2.79 MnT in Nov’18 while Pet coke exports had fell 40% on the month to 0.27 MnT.
Total coal exports from the country have increased 2% Y-o-Y to 30.74 MnT during the first 11 months of CY18 compared with 30.04 MnT recorded in the same period of CY17.
Major Coal Importers:
Japan remained the largest coal importer from Canada, despite recording a fall in coal receipt during Nov’18. Japanese coal imports were down 19% on the month to 0.75 MnT in Nov’18, but still 50% higher on the year from 0.5 MnT in Nov’17.
South Korea emerged as the second-largest coal importer, with a remarkable growth in imports during Nov’18. The country had taken 0.53 MnT coal in Nov’18, up 165% M-o-M from 0.2 MnT in Oct’18, also rising 56% Y-o-Y from 0.34 MnT in Nov’17.
Indian coal imports were marked at 0.47 MnT in Nov’18, up 47% M-o-M from 0.32 MnT in Oct’18.
China with 343% rise in coal imports followed by Taiwan (up 113% M-o-M) and Vietnam (0.15 MnT coal taken in Nov’18 after nil imports in Oct’18) were the major countries that had boosted Canadian coal exports in Nov’18.
