Scrap imports from Germany increased 12% while that from Poland and Austria by 83% and 61% in Oct’18.
Czech Republic – one of the major scrap exporters among Eu-28 witnessed a considerable rise in scrap exports in Oct’18. As per recent customs data, Czech Republic exported 201,194 MT ferrous scrap in Oct’18, up 25% M-o-M as against 160,719 MT in Sept’18.
Notably, ferrous scrap exports from the Czech Republic in October hit 1 year high as earlier to this the highest exports were recorded at 205,330 MT in Oct’17. Also, on yearly premises, scrap exports declined marginally by 2% Y-o-Y as against 205,330 MT ferrous scrap in Oct’17.
Country’s scrap exports increased in Oct’18 after observing stability successively for earlier 3 months ahead of the seasonal slowdown towards year-end.
Germany remained the largest importer in Oct’18 – Germany remained the largest importer occupying highest 43% share (87,342 MT, up 12% M-o-M) in total scrap exports in Oct’18. Followed by other major importers like Poland (48,179 MT, +83% M-o-M), Italy (36,677 MT, +5% M-o-M), Austria (14,718 MT, +61% M-o-M) and Slovakia (11,943 MT, +12% M-o-M) occupying 24%, 18%, 7% and 6% share respectively in Oct’18.

Country’s total finish steel long exports increased 5% M-o-M to 165,105 MT in Oct’18. On the other hand, finish flat imports rose by 14% M-o-M to 362,313 MT in Oct’18. As per WSA, crude steel production recorded at 390,309 MT in Nov’18 as against 375,496 MT in Oct’18.
Scrap exports marginally up during Jan-Oct’18 – Czech Republic exported 1,783,119 MT ferrous scrap during Jan-Oct’18 witnessing almost stability as against 1,769,127 MT during the same period last year. The country produced 4.53 MnT crude steel during Jan-Nov’18, up 9% as against 4.17 MnT crude steel produced during the same period last year.
The Czech Republic is the world’s 20th largest steel importer with around 7 MnT imports recorded in 2017. Largest steel producer ArcelorMittal Ostrava followed by Trinecke Zelezarny, Vitkovice Steel, ZDB Dratovna are majorly based in the Moravian region of the country.
