Iran: Esfahan Steel Company to Supply UIC60 Rails to Iran Railways

Eshfahan Steel Company (ESCO), one of the largest finished long producer in MENA region has exported 661,778 MT of steel during the eight months of current Persian year (21 Mar-21 Nov’18). Exports were down by 11% Y-o-Y. Major product exported by ESCO were Ingot (188,803 MT), rebar (113,904 MT), followed by beam (76,907 MT) and wire rod (29,678 MT).

Recently, ESCO signed a contract with Iranian Railways to supply 15,000 MT UIC60 rails to the railways. According to Mr. Khairullah Khadmi, Deputy Minister of Roads and Urban Development, “A contract to purchase 15,000 MT of rails UIC60 has been signed with ESCO. We hope that with this, the Islamic Republic of Iran Railways will be able to maximize the use of domestic capacity for the development of rail infrastructure”.

In Sep’18, ESCO started producing U160 rails and produced the first batch of 1000 MT. Earlier in Sep’18, Mr. Mohammad Amin Yousefzadeh, Director of Rolling Engineering in ESCO said “We were totally dependent on the competence and knowledge of Iranian experts in the manufacture of these UIC60 rails. The company is ready and has the capacity for launching the rail’s mass production”.

Mr. Yousefzadeh said “In the production of the UIC60 rails, we have fully utilized the internal capability and managed to produce this important product with the power and expertise of the manpower.

Islamic Republic of Iran Railways and ESCO signed an agreement in July 2014 for the production of UIC60 rails, with the delivery deadline set for September 2015. ESCO missed the deadline and no new developments took place until late 2016 when the company launched its new rail production line in cooperation with the German Kuttner Company. UIC60 rails are capable of supporting high-speed trains.
