Major ports in the country witnessed a drastic fall in their Iron ore cargo during the first four months of the current financial year.
The drop was mainly on the account of:
· Slow movement of ore from Orissa in April
· Weak demand from China
· Ongoing investigation into illegal mining and exports in major producing states.
A senior official at the New Mangalore Port Trust (NMPT) said that there has been a drop of 74% in Iron ore traffic during April- July owing to the ban on Iron ore export.
Same has been the case of Eastern ports. Paradip Port Trust saw a fall of 23% in exports during April-July period. The port handled 890,000 tonnes of Iron ore as against 1.4 million tonnes in the year ago period.
Haldia Port has also witnessed around 38 per cent drop in April-July period bringing down its average monthly traffic to 650,000 tonnes.
