Canada: Coal Exports Down 31% M-o-M in Oct’18

Canadian coal exports have fallen 31% M-o-M to 2.32 MnT in Oct’18 against 3.34 MnT in Sep’18, and to the lowest level since 2.19 MnT exported in Jan’18, as per the data released by the customs.

The total, which comprise of bituminous coal, met coke and pet coke, was however, 17% higher on the year from 1.98 MnT in Oct’18. In contrast, export of Bituminous coal from the country has fell to its lowest total for CY18, marked at 1.81 MnT in Oct’18.

During the first 10 months of CY18 (Jan’18-Oct’18), Canada has exported 27.69 MnT coal, slightly down Y-o-Y from 27.91 MnT recorded in CY17.

Major Coal Importers:
Japan remained the largest coal receiver from Canada in Oct’18. The country’s import of 0.93 MnT,  was up 31% M-o-M from 0.71 MnT in Sep’18, also marking a significant growth of 145% Y-o-Y.

India also maintained its position at the second spot despite registering a 54% decline in monthly coal imports. The country had taken 0.32 MnT coal from Canada in Oct’18 against 0.7 MnT in Sep’18, which was however 33% higher on the year from 0.24 MnT in Oct’17.

US was the third-largest coal importer, with a slight rise in monthly imports to 0.25 MnT in Oct’18. On the other hand, South Korea and China noted hefty decline in coal sourcing from Canada.

South Korean imports decreased 71% M-o-M to 0.2 MnT, while Chinese imports were down 79% M-o-M to 0.07 MnT in Oct’18. Germany, Netherlands, Taiwan and Poland were among the other major coal receivers in Oct’18.
