Mongolian coal exports have continued its steady rise on the monthly basis, by registering an increase of 10% in Oct’18.
Data provided by customs shows that the country has exported 3.91 MnT coal in Oct’18 against 3.54 MnT in Sep’18. Notably, exports from the country have been continuously rising for the past three months.
Besides, export in Sep’18 was also 50% higher on the year from 2.61 MnT in Oct’17. During the first 10 months of CY18 (Jan’18-Oct’18), the country’s export has grew 10% Y-o-Y to 30.94 MnT against 28.13 MnT recorded in the same period of CY17.
Mongolia’s major customer-China had taken 3.86 MnT coal during the month, up 9% M-o-M from 3.53 MnT in Sep’18. Fewer supplies to Singapore (0.04 MnT) and UK (0.01 MnT) were also recorded in Oct’18.
In a recent development, Mongolia is aiming to complete rail-line from its Tavan Tolgoi coal project to the Chinese border by 2021. The rail link with capacity to deliver 30 MnT coal a year coal would boost its exports to China.
Mongolia had exported 32.97 MnT coal in CY17 and at the present rate the country is expected to cross the previous year’s export total by Nov’18.
The country has set a goal to increase its exports to 40 MnT in the coming years.
