Russian coal exports have witnessed a modest growth during Sep’18 despite the fall in non-coking coal shipments during the month.
According to the data provided by Russian customs, coal exports from the country have increased 5% M-o-M to 19.74 MnT in Sep’18 compared with 18.75 MnT in Aug’18. On the yearly basis, exports in Sep’18 were 12% higher than the levels attained in Sep’17.
Russia’s non-coking coal exports had made a strong start to the year by recording y-o-y growth in each of the first 5-months of CY18. However, exports have slowed down thereafter in line with a fall in demand from Europe.
Non-coking export in Sep’18 had registered slight decline on the year, marked at 13.13 MnT against 13.18 MnT in Sep’17, which was also 8% lower on the month from 14.24 MnT in Aug’18.
A detailed break-up of exports indicates that all other major coal grades had seen a monthly growth in Sep’18 except-Non-coking coal.
Coking coal export from the country has crossed the 3-MnT mark for the first time over the two year period, while recording a growth of 38% M-o-M in Sep’18.
Anthracite coal exports had also hit its highest monthly total, marked at 2.98 MnT in Sep’18.
Met Coke and Pet Coke exports were marked at 0.22 MnT and 0.15 MnT, up 29% and 7% respectively on the month in Sep’18.

Quantity in MnT
Major Coal Importers:
South Korea remained the largest coal importer. The country continued to boost its coal purchases from Russia which had hit its highest monthly total for the CY18 in Sep’18.
Korean coal import grew 15% M-o-M to 2.72 MnT in Sep’18 which was also 37% higher on the year from 1.98 MnT in Sep’17.
Germany emerged as the second-largest coal receiver in Sep’18, after imports from China had slipped during the month.
Germany’s coal import increased 52% M-o-M to 1.89 MnT, also recording a remarkable growth of 145% Y-o-Y in Sep’18. Chinese coal imports were down 10% M-o-M to 1.88 MnT in Sep’18.
Japan, Ukraine, Poland, Turkey and Taiwan were amongst the other major coal receivers during the month.

Russian Coal Imports:
Russia’s coal import during the month stood 1.74 MnT in Sep’18, down 5% M-o-M from 1.84 MnT in Aug’18, but up 1% Y-o-Y from 1.72 MnT in Sep’17.
Major imports were catered from Kazakhstan, while Ukraine, Azerbaijan and Poland had supplied the remaining share in Sep’18.
