Canada- one of the world’s major scrap exporters witnessed a significant rise in scrap exports in Q3’2018 as against the same period last year. As per recent customs data, Canada exported 1,380,867 MT ferrous scrap during Q3’CY18, up 50% Y-o-Y as against 921,782 MT in Q3’CY17. On the other hand, exports witnessed stability on a quarterly basis in Q3’CY18 as against 1,395,691 MT exports recorded during Q2’CY18.
Canadian scrap exports down 14% M-o-M in Sept’18 – Canadian scrap exports fell by 14% M-o-M in Sept’18. Canada exported 419,572 MT ferrous scrap in Sept’18 as against 490,270 MT exports recorded in Aug’18. On yearly premises, Canadian exports increased by 38% Y-o-Y as against 304,784 MT ferrous scrap exports recorded in Sept’17.
USA remained the largest importer of Canadian ferrous scrap – USA remained largest importer occupying highest 76% share (315,105 MT, +4% M-o-M) in total scrap exports in Sept’18. Followed by other major importers were Turkey (51,300 MT, -50% M-o-M), Taiwan (13,320 MT), India (11,416 MT) and Bangladesh (10,299 MT). While Mexico and Brazil observed nil import volumes from Canada in Sept’18.
Canada’s crude steel production up 10% M-o-M in Sept’18 – According to World Steel Association, country’s crude steel production recorded at 1.12 MnT, up 10% M-o-M in Sept’18. Canada exported 6.79 MnT iron ore in Sept’18, up 19% M-o-M as against 5.70 MnT in Aug’18. Rise in iron ore exports and crude steel production could have resulted in fall in scrap exports in Sept’18.

Canada scrap exports rose 27% Y-o-Y during Jan-Sept’18 – Majorly on rising Turkish imports as compared to last year, Canada witnessed 27% Y-o-Y increase in scrap exports during Jan-Sept’18. It exported 3.77 MnT ferrous scrap as against 2.98 MnT during the same period last year. Turkey remained second largest importer (0.65 MnT, up 150% Y-o-Y) followed after the largest importer, USA (2.52 MnT, +9% Y-o-Y) during Jan-Sept’18.
Canada produced 9.63 MnT crude steel during Jan-Sept’18, down 3% as compared to 9.94 MnT crude steel produced during the same period last year. Despite of high average global scrap export prices as compared to last year amid increasing domestic generation of scrap, the demand for premium quality scrap in Canada increased significantly from major importers like Turkey, Brazil, Taiwan and India in CY18.
